Infield prospects Walker, Winn selected to represent Cardinals in Futures Game

Drafted as the Cardinals’ first two picks of the shortened 2020 MLB draft and with each other at across three levels of minor-league baseball, third baseman Jordan Walker and shortstop Masyn Winn now have another milestone to share with each other during their minor-league careers.

Walker and Winn were selected on Thursday to the represent the Cardinals organization in the 2022 All-Stars Futures Game.

The two will be a part of the National League squad that also includes Cubs prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, former first overall pick and Pirates prospect Henry Davis, and Nationals prospect Darren Baker, who is the son of Astros manager Dusty Baker.

Having batted .317 with 14 homers and 25 RBIs a year ago in Class Low-A and Class High-A, Walker was presented with the challenge of starting the 2022 sesason with Class AA Springfield at 19 years old.

Despite his age, the now 20-year-old has hit .310 and posted an .899 OPS over 66 games. Walker’s 21 doubles rank fifth among Texas League hitters. His .401 on-base percentage and .498 slugging percentage lead all current Springfield hitters.

Winn started his season with Class High-A Peoria where he batted .349 with 11 doubles, seven triples and had a .970 OPS in 33 games with the Chiefs. His strong start prompted a call-up that reunited him on the infield with Walker in late May. Since making his Class AA debut on May 25, Winn is batting .250 and holds an OPS of .765 through 36 games. It at the Class AA level where Winn has connected on six of his seven homers of the season.

The duo, who both received help form a teammate this season to fix mechanics in their swings, were selected by the Cardinals in the first two rounds of the 2020 draft.

Walker, a first-round selection, was chosen as the 21st overall out of Decatur High School in Stone Mountain, Ga. Winn was selected in the second-round 54th overall from Kingwood High School in Kingwood, Texas.

The two made their pro debuts as a part of Class Low-A Palm Beach’s opening day roster to begin the 2021 season and wound up finishing the season together with Class High-A Peoria.

The Futures Game will take place on July 16 at 6 p.m. St. Louis time at Dodger Stadium. The exhibition will be a seven-inning game that with a National League vs. American League format.

It will be broadcasted on the Peacock app.
